Grant Cycles/Deadlines: Grant applications are reviewed on a quarterly basis.  Grant applications must be postmarked by: January 1, April 1, July 1, October 1.

If the first working date of the month is a holiday or a Sunday, then the next working date is an acceptable postmark date. Grant applications postmarked after these deadlines will not be reviewed until the following quarter.

Example: If an application is postmarked on January 5th, it will have missed the January 1st deadline and therefore will not be reviewed at the January meeting of the Foundation Board, rather, it will be deferred until the April Foundation Board grant review meeting.

Eligibility: Foundation guidelines restrict the use of funds to the Detroit Lakes Area. We normally fund start-up activities, capital improvements, equipment and special program needs. It is not our policy to fund on-going expenses of an endeavor or to fund an individual person. All funds must be granted to a 501(c) 3 fiscal agent or a unit of government.

Page Limits: Please keep your application to the three page application form. It is the intent of the Foundation to request only essential information, therefore we require a concise, brief overview of your organization and/or project. If you submit additional documents, they may not be reviewed with your application. If we require additional information from you, we will request that information prior to the grants formal review.

Grant Copies: You may use this application form or recreate it on your computer. Submit the original application with signatures and five copies of your application. If you are a 501 (c) 3 organization, please provide a copy of your IRS Determination Letter with the original copy of your application. (It is not necessary to send multiple copies of your IRS Determination Letter)

Mail your completed application and copies to:  Detroit Lakes Area Community Foundation, PO Box 1340, Detroit Lakes, MN 56502 by the respective deadlines.

Size of Awards: The Detroit Lakes Area Community Foundation uses the earnings on its endowment fund to make grant awards in the Detroit Lakes Area. Each July the earnings are analyzed to set the limit of available grant dollars for the coming year. Grants are generally small and rarely exceed $2,500. If an organization has recently received funding from the Foundation, it is likely that it will not receive a second grant in the same or subsequent year, in an effort to help the greatest number of grantees.
