City of Detroit Lakes Public Safety - Fire Department

About the DLFD

Detroit Lakes Fire Department proudly protects 15000 people living in an area of 273 square miles. We operate out of one station that protects a primarily residential area. Our department is a public department whose members are on a volunteer status. We have an ISO rating of 5.
We are a progressive volunteer department located in the heart of the beautiful lakes area of mid-western Minnesota. We respond to a mixture of residential and rural fire situations. We respond to rescue calls in an area of about 1500 square  miles, doing mostly auto extrications, some hazmat and technical rescue. We run approximately 200 calls per year with no medical calls. We are fortunate to have an automatic mutual aid agreement with our three surrounding communities. These communities, Frazee, Audubon and Lake Park, have very strong and dedicated departments. Our departments continue to work together to increase the quality of fire service for our entire area. Detroit Lakes is at the intersection of three major highways and two rail systems. This combined with the influx of summer residents and vacationers create an unfortunately large number of auto extrication calls. We have recently formed a Technical Rescue Team and continue to upgrade our training in other areas.
Detroit Lakes is at the center of an area with 412 lakes within 25 miles. The city has approx. 10,000 residents with almost twice that many summer residents.
