Detroit Lakes Police Department K-9 Program

In July of 2003, our former K-9 "Quincy" passed away and left a major gap not only in our ranks but in our resources. It was quickly decided to continue the program into the new year. The support from the public was outstanding and nearly twice as much of the needed funds were raised to help pay the costs for getting a new K-9 unit off the ground.

In 2004, Officer Robert Strand was teamed with K-9 "Chase" and began patrol of our streets just before the summer tourist season. They were involved in a variety of critical situations that were very helpful to law enforcement and other public safety agencies around the region over the last two years.

In may of 2006, K-9 Chase passed away due to unknown medical yet suspicious reasons. He was only 4 years old.

Officer Robert Strand was again chosen to attend a special school down in North Carolina in the late fall of 2006 to get paired with another dog. "Macho" is a three year old German Sheperd imported from England and was purchased from Ocard Knoll Kennel in Angier, NC. The school Strand attended was two weeks long.
