| The city owned water utility is available to all
residents within the City of Detroit Lakes. The utility supplies approximately 400,000,000
gallons of treated water annually to an average of 3,200 customers. |
The system is staffed with operators certified by
the Minnesota Department of Health and has daily peaking capabilities of up to 3.5 million
gallons a day. All water is produced from wells with an average depth of 230 feet. All
water is treated through an iron and manganese removal plant, filtered and chlorinated
before entering the distribution system. Storage capacity consists of a one million gallon
tower, 150,000 gallon sandpipe and 520,000 gallons on site at the treatment plant. |
| The utility maintains a certified laboratory and
takes very seriously its roll in providing the community with a clean and safe supply of
water. The utility has also been very involved in a well head protection program since
1995 and received an award at the National Groundwater Guardian Conference in 1996 for
these efforts. The utility also received an award at this conference in 1997 and 1998 in
recognition for its exceptional educational activities in promotion of clean water
protection. |
