City of Detroit Lakes Public Works - Storm & Sanitary Sewers

Storm Water Drainage
Public Works DepartmentThe City of Detroit Lakes takes a proactive approach with storm water run off. Improving the City storm drainage system by constructing water holding basins to reduce the nutrient run off into our lakes and streams. The City of Detroit Lakes staff performs routine maintenance on our storm water collection system including lift stations and catch basins cleaning to insure proper drainage of storm water. Homeowners are requested to minimize the discharge of grass clippings into the street because grass clippings and leaves are one of the major causes of obstructing catch basin drainage. Sanitary Sewer Collection System
Public Works DepartmentThe Public Works Department employees maintain the sanitary sewer collection mains with an aggressive maintenance program on an annual basis. The City is constantly monitoring the condition of the sanitary sewer mains with cleaning equipment, televising the lines when a problem occurs, and replacing or lining the sanitary sewer mains when it becomes necessary. Before a new street is constructed or reconstruction of an existing street over a sanitary sewer main, the pipe is evaluated to determine the condition and make sure that it is in good repair before the street construction may begin.
