Residents and tourists alike take advantage of the excellent fishing, boating, canoeing, swimming, sailing, and water skiing facilities here. Other leisure activities that can be enjoyed include camping, trap shooting, softball, volleyball, tennis, golfing or just basking in the sun on the mile-long sandy beach on the north shore of Detroit Lake. Visit the American Legion Campground of Detroit Lakes. Also, for those looking for open space for picnics and other leisure activities, Detroit Lakes provides a large and well maintained park system with many picnic facilities. Detroit Lakes also offers some of the best winter activities in the state. Winter activities that draw visitors to the area include ice fishing, curling, downhill and cross country skiing, snowmobiling over sixty miles of groomed trails and skating at outdoor rinks or at the ice arena. Swimming can also be enjoyed during the winter months at one of the 3 indoor pools.
Nature buffs will enjoy visiting the Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge with its 43,000 acres of national beauty and its interpretive center with nature displays and slide presentations.
For those interested in cultural and entertainment activities Detroit Lakes has the Becker County Museum, the Public Library, Historic Holmes Theatre, art exhibits and community chorus.
Detroit Lakes also is the site of the Annual Northwest Water Carnival, held in July. Activities for this event include a water fights, kids' day, crafts fair, a carnival, the Miss Northwest Pageant, dances and the Parade of the Northwest.
The WE Fest Country Music Festival is held annually in Detroit Lakes in August and features top country music entertainers. The WE Fest is the biggest country music and camping festival in the nation and attracts tens of thousands of country music enthusiasts of entertainment.
